Say Goodbye to Summer at Lake Forest Events

Summer is winding down and the cool days of fall are almost here. It’s time to put the pool toys away and get ready to pick apples, carve pumpkins, and watch football. It’s a busy time of year, full of fun events and exciting activities. Two excellent events are coming up soon, and they’re just a short drive from your home in Lake Forest. One will help you say goodbye to summer, while the other is the perfect way to welcome fall!

Annual Block Party 2019 (September 14)

Lake Forest’s Block Party 2019 is the perfect way to wrap up your summer. Join in on the fun this September at Gorton Community Center—there will be something for everyone! Great food, fun activities, and an outdoor movie are sure to make this a memorable party.

Food Trucks

Numerous local food trucks will be on-site for the party. Grab a gourmet grilled cheese sandwich and savory rosemary fries from one of Chicago’s best food trucks, The Fat Shallot. Satisfy your sweet tooth with authentic caramel-filled stroopwafel from Bonique Gourmet Waffle or a classic chocolate chip cookie ice cream sandwich from the Royal Ice Cream truck.

Activities

Browse the party grounds for interesting activities—many local non-profit organizations have partnered with Gorton to provide fantastic services to the community. Stop by the Fill a Heart 4 Kids table to try your hand at tie-dying shirts or make a beautiful friendship bracelet for children who are homeless or living with a foster family. Get your heart pumping with Salsarobics, a fantastic workout that pairs aerobics with Latin dance music.

If you’re a fan of animated films (or comic books!) then you’ll want to stay for the outdoor movie. This year’s title is Spiderman: Into the Spider-Verse. The movie begins at sundown—don’t forget to bring your lawn chairs, blankets, and bug spray.

The Great Highwood Pumpkin Festival (October 11-13)

Celebrate the fun and beauty of fall at the 10th annual Great Highwood Pumpkin Festival. This festival is a huge hit, with over 70,000 guests attending each year. Not only is the event a ton of fun, but it also benefits Make-A-Wish Illinois, which works diligently to grant the wishes of critically ill children all over the state.

Activities

The festival is filled with fantastic activities, contests, food, events, and of course—pumpkins! Start your visit off with a few thrills on your favorite classic carnival rides, then make some time to browse the booths of several talented local art and craft vendors. Animal lovers should definitely make time for the pet costume contest—it’s easily the cutest thing you’ll see all year!

Be sure to catch a live performance while you’re at the festival. Four stages mean plenty of room for talented local musicians—stop by the main stage, north stage, party lounge stage, or food court stage and get ready to dance (or just sit down and enjoy the music and a snack). You’ll hear a wide variety of music genres, from country to rock to blues.

Jack-o-Lanterns

Each year, the Great Highwood Pumpkin Festival strives to beat the world record for “most lit jack-o-lanterns on display”. The current world record is 30,581. The festival partners with Pearce’s Farm Stand, who generously donates 20,000 pumpkins to help reach this goal. You can be a part of this record-breaking event by carving a spectacular jack-o-lantern and adding it to the display! Everyone who brings a jack-o-lantern will receive free admission.

You can see tens of thousands of carved creations throughout the festival—some are cute, some are scary, and some are downright brilliant. Have your camera ready—the bright glow of thousands of pumpkins is truly a spectacular sight.

These are just two of the incredible upcoming events in the Lake Forest area. Please feel free to contact us to learn more about your home at Kelmscott Apartments and the wonderful city of Lake Forest.
