If you are a follower of this blog then you are familiar with the plethora of things to do in the Lake Forest and North Shore communities. Amongst the well-known restaurants and beautiful hiking trails, there is a medley of activities that are lesser known but just as fun.
If you’re looking to veer off the beaten path, head to these locations:
Take a Swing at the World’s Most Unusual Golf Course
Located only 10 miles outside of Lake Forest you’ll find Par-King which has been anointed as the most unusual golf course in the world! A sprawling mini-golf course, once known the “Taj Mahal of mini golf”, has received glowing accolades from The Travel Channel, Golf Digest, The Chicago Tribune, The North Shore Magazine, and many more. Although challenging and immense, Par-King also packs a pretty interesting history. Today, the massive site encompasses two 18-hole courses, with a unique feature at each hole. A couple of highlights are a miniature Mt. Rushmore, a functioning ball elevator, and a golf ball roulette wheel! If you haven’t already been there I definitely recommend checking them out here.
Visit What Was Once the Largest 24-Karat Gold-Plated Object in North America
Intrigued? Did you know that a half hour north of Lake Forest lies the six-story, 17,000 square foot Gold Pyramid House? Built as a private residence in 1977 by Jim and Linda Onan, this Egyptian homage is now open to the public. Surrounded by an honest-to-goodness moat the estate includes a replica of King Tut’s tomb, a 55-foot statue of Pharaoh Ramses II, a metal palm tree, and a four-car garage constructed out of pyramids. The house was once covered by gold plates, but the neighbors were having none of that. Unfortunately, the house was engulfed in a large fire last year so you can no longer tour inside. That said, you can still walk the grounds and they even offer outdoor tours on the weekends. There is talk that Gold Pyramid House might be demolished so if you’re interested in checking out the original I would recommend doing so soon. Directions can be found here.
Rest in Peace at Ahlgrim Acres
Let me give you a little history; in 1964 a mortician named Roger Ahlgrim expanded his burgeoning funeral home business and in doing so found himself with a large amount of extra space, namely a huge basement. What to do with all this extra space? Build a Halloween themed arcade with a full-size shuffleboard course, ping pong table, bumper pool table, and a foosball table made by Roger himself. Not to mention the 9 hole mini-golf course that started the whole thing, of course. Odd, I know, but apparently not odd enough, or just odd enough, that people travel to Palatine, IL from all over the world just to check it out. Located a touch over 20 miles from Lake Forest, this ghoulish game room- literally the opposite of Par-King- could be the perfect end to your odd and interesting day!
