Celebrate Fall with Bagpipes & Bonfires in Lake Forest

a bonfire in Lake Forest

The fall season is upon us and the people of Lake Forest know how to celebrate. The annual Bagpipes & Bonfire event brings people together for fun and to support the Lake Forest Open Lands Association. Nature is important here. Committed to community and forest, Lake Forest has been named a Tree City USA by the National Arbor Day Foundation 38 times.

Food, Fun & Games

Gather on the green of the Middlefork Farm Nature Preserve at 4 p.m. Waiting for you is a great picnic feast served up with your choice of beer, wine, or spirits. Enjoy the outdoors in the fading light of day. Watch the men in kilts throw hammers and toss cabers during the Scottish games. Maybe you’ll feel like kicking up your heels as you watch the highland dancers.

Bagpipes & Bonfire

As twilight approaches, listen. The pipes and drums are calling as the band gets ready to march on the green. Highlanders of long ago once marched to war, the pipes and drums heard from miles away so as to frighten the enemy. You may want to cover your ears, but keep your eyes open. What will unfold before you is stirring.

Soon after, look up. Men in kilts fall from the sky. These professional skydivers set the stage for the lighting of the bonfire. Just as dusk settles in the fire is lit. It’s time to enjoy the warmth of the flames and the time spent with family and friends.

This annual fundraiser takes place on September 30th this year. It allows the community to preserve the natural lands for generations to come while building community today.
