One of the best-kept secrets in Lake Forest is the 30 miles of recreational trails open for walking, jogging and biking year round. These trails connect north to south, trail to trail and communities to each other. Get outside and explore the network of trails and enjoy Lake Forest in all its autumn glory!

Robert McClory Bike Path

This trail runs the length of Lake County and connects communities from Chicago’s North Shore all the way to the Wisconsin border. It enters Lake Forest at Old Elm Road and continues north into Lake Bluff. Because the trail follows the Metra Union Pacific North line there is very little incline and the route is particularly beautiful in autumn when the leaves turn. There are twelve entry points to this trail in Lake Forest including the Braeside Metra station on the southern end.

Middlefork Savanna Trail

This hidden gem in Lake Forest has one of the best examples of rare tallgrass savanna in the state of Illinois. This 4.3-mile gravel trail includes woodlands, prairie, sedge and meadow marshes. Because this trail winds through the Middlefork Savanna Forest Preserve it is a wonderland for birders, but frequent visitors also include cyclists, joggers, and dog walkers. As the trail crosses the Chicago River see if you can spot Green Herons, Great Egrets, or a myriad of other waterfowl.

Des Plaines River Trail

A fifteen-minute drive west of Lake Forest is the popular Des Plaines River Trail that is great for biking, horseback riding, walking, and in winter, XC skiing. It runs 6.6 miles from Van Patten Woods Forest Preserve to the Jerome Huppert Woods Forest Preserve. Along the trail, there are a variety of surfaces from pavement to forested single track. The more established trail is to the north, further south the trail is more natural. Picnic areas are located all along the trail with easy-access parking lots. Fall is an ideal time to take in all the natural beauty of this forested wilderness area.
