When the calendar flips to April, we are all eager to get outside and find the first hints of spring.
Head to these places around Lake Forest to enjoy the first leaves unfurling from the naked trees and eager April blossoms emerging from the soil.
Sunrise Park & Beach
It’s never too soon to seek out the lapping coastlines of Lake Michigan. From the shores of Sunrise Park, tickle your toes in the sandy beaches which officially open on April 6th. Even if the water is too nippy for a dip, enjoy spring unfolding from the numerous park benches and lounge chairs or take the kayak out for an adventure over the sparkling water.
Skokie River Nature Preserve
Head into the marshlands of the Skokie River Nature Preserve to pay homage to the Ice Age while kissing the winter goodbye. The preserve features endless hiking trails, perfect for viewing the unique, native birds and plants of the Lake Chicago prairie lands.
For some genuine insights to spring in the natural world, take a journey to the Melody Farm to spot numerous colorful birds including egrets, great blue heron, and wood ducks. Head out just after the rain for a special concert of chorus frogs arriving to lay their eggs in the fishless pond of the wetlands.
Middlefork Savanna Forest Preserve
Get the legs moving with the 4-mile hike that meanders through the tall grass savannah, oak woodlands, meadows, and marshes. Dogs are allowed here (on trail only), so feel free to bring the pooch along, too. This is a wonderful place to enjoy a variety of wildlife bursting with activity.
